The Teenage Cancer Trust Fundraiser
21st birthdays are huge.
Be it your sister, brother or close friend - you always wonder “what kind of present shall I get for them?” You always want to make it something special. For Rupert’s birthday, the answer was no easier for the staff of RGN! What to get the man who literally has everything?!
So, we put our heads together and thought a little bit. Then we thought a little more. Fast forward two weeks later (when his birthday was looming frighteningly close) and we still didn’t have an answer. Luckily, a light-bulb moment came soon after in the form of discussing the possible charity promotions Rupert would be doing this year and at an RGN staffer’s suggestion of “Wouldn’t a fundraiser be a cool thing to do?!”
Now hey! Why hadn’t we thought of this before?!
As fans will know, Rupert has many many charities that he has leant his support and time to over the past decade. From Comic Relief, Lisa Walks, Sense.org, Beat Bullying and Teenage Cancer Trust (to name but a few)…it’s a long list! Our next problem was trying to decide between them all; which charity to spotlight for the drive?
Thankfully, we didn’t have to look too far for a solution. As the fundraiser was in Rupert’s honour, we thought it most appropriate to consult with himself and his family over which cause they would like to have at the forefront of the campaign. It wasn’t an easy decision by any means, but through much discussion and factoring down they finally had one picked: Teenage Cancer Trust.
An amazing charity; TCT reaches out to thousands, upon thousands, upon thousands of UK teens each and every year. In a caption from their website, they cite their main aim as being to: “fund and build specialist units for young people in NHS hospitals. Our units bring teenagers with cancer together with loads of new friends of their own age so they can support each other…with the units we currently have around the UK, half of the teenagers diagnosed with cancer now have access to this dedicated, specialist support. Our aim is to build enough units so that by 2012, every teenager in the UK will be treated on one.”
So, bringing the campaign full circle, we teamed up with TCT and got down to business. The drive was launched on the site, complete with a rather snazzy mini subsite (thanks Steph!), and all systems were go.
In less than 24 hours the Grint family and our readers had pulled together to contribute to 85% of the total target. We are even yet stumped as to how to put such amazingness as that into words. We were left with no choice but to bump up the target and see just how much could be raised! As ever, the fans didn’t let us down.
By September 17th, £1,445.37 or $2,383.56 had been amassed - a truly unbelievable feat.
A big, huge thank you again to everyone - the Grint family, the fans and the lovely ladies at TCT - who got behind the 21st birthday fundraiser and put in their time and finances to support this wonderful cause.
